Team Ireland travels to Liverpool for “Four Nations” MMA Tournament this weekend

Best of luck to Team Ireland over competing at the FitXpo Four Nations MMA Tournament this weekend.

Ireland made history in 2021 when the Ireland and Northern Ireland national teams combined to make the first ever all-Ireland MMA group to be sent to the IMMAF World Cup, in a plan that took many years to materialise.

MMA in Ireland, apart from how the sport is governed medically, is pretty much an all-island affair and has been for a long time. Going to a show in Newry, Belfast, Derry, Clonmel, Dublin or Meath, you’ll mostly find the same gyms, cuts teams, media, referees and officials. You’ll not find many flags and sectarianism is rare to hear of. This is down to the hard work being put in over Decades by coaches such as Andy Ryan and Danny Corr, the latter of which offers free training in his Belfast gym ZKJ for anyone of any background, age or religion, with backing and support from the local council.

Following the World Cup, Team Ireland set off for Bahrain to take part in the IMMAF MMA Super Cup, where they won 2nd place and took home $75,000!! From years of not having enough athletes or funding to being a top team and winning huge prize money – the results are speaking for themselves for Team Ireland.

In so many ways these are pivotal times on this island. And MMA, for many, is part of the path forward, out of the darkness and into the world, literally and metaphorically, with a bang.

This weekend, the English Mixed Martial Arts Association has created a new tournament-style compeition called The Four Nations which will be held at the Fit Xpo event in Liverpool.

The all-Ireland team will join Wales, England and Scotland to battle it out in hopes to be crowned the Four Nations MMA champion.

The athletes chosen clockwise from top left;

Sinead Ni Nuallain (Flyweight)
Solomon Simon (Lightweight)
Ross Quearney (Bantamweight)
